First appearing in Japan in the Heian period (794-1185), the tanto dagger was often worn alongside the tachi and later Katana swords. Early tanto-like blades were often made from broken longer swords, or even yari spearpoints. It was customary for a samurai, upon entering a Home peacefully, to remove his katana and keep his tanto on his person. In the decades prior to WWII, the tanto came into vogue and was commonly worn again.
